Stations of the Cross by St. Pio of Pietrelcina

ACT OF CONTRITION

My Lord Jesus Christ, You have made this journey to die for me with unutterable love, and I have so many times unworthily abandoned You; but now I love You with my whole heart, and because I love You I repent sincerely for ever having offended You. Pardon me, my God, and permit me to accompany You in this journey. You go to die for love of me; I wish also my beloved Redeemer, to die for love of You. My Jesus, I will live and die always united to You. Amen.

Jesus is Condemned to Death

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

Consider how Jesus, after having been scourged and crowned with thorns, was unjustly condemned by Pilate to die on the cross.

" Our compassionate Lord comes lovingly to my aid when the trial is greatest and like the loving father He is, consoles me and encourages me to walk always more and more along the Way of the Cross." - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory be to the Father…

Jesus is Made to Carry the Cross

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

Consider how Jesus, in making this journey with the cross on His shoulders, thought of us, and offered for us, to his Father, the death that He was about to undergo.

" I have no wish whatsoever to have my cross lightened, for it is a joy for me to suffer with Jesus. When I contemplate the cross on the shoulders of Jesus, I feel myself strengthened and I exult with holy joy." - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

Third Stations

Jesus Falls the First Time

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

Consider this first fall of Jesus under His cross. His flesh was torn by the scourges, His head crowned with thorns, and He had lost a great quantity of blood. He was so weakened that He could scarcely walk, and yet He had to carry this great load upon His shoulders and thus He fell several times in His journey.

" The most certain proof of love is to suffer for the one we love and since the Son of God suffered so much for pure love, there can no longer be any doubt that the cross carried for Him becomes lovable in proporation to our love." - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

Fourth Stations

Jesus Meets His Afflicted Mother

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

Consider the meeting of the Son and the Mother, which took place on this journey. Jesus and Mary looked at each other, and their looks became as so many sorrows to wound those hearts which loved each other tenderly.

"May the Virgin of Sorrows obtain for us the grace to penetrate always further into the mystery of the cross…May she obtain for us the love of the cross, of suffering, and of sorrows and may she who was the first to live the Gospel in all its perfection, and in all its severity, gain for us the impulse to follow her immediately." - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

Fifth Stations

The Cyrenian Helps Jesus to Carry His Cross

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

Consider that the Romans, seeing that at each step Jesus, from weakness, was on the point of expiring, and fearing that He would die on the way, constrained Simon the Cyrenian to carry the cross behind our Lord.

"Jesus chooses souls for Himself and among these He has chosen me to assist Him in the salvation of men. And the more these souls suffer without any consolation, the more they lighten the sufferings of Jesus. This is why I desire to suffer more and more without any consolation and it is in this I find my joy." - Padre PioOur Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

Sixth Stations

Veronica Wipes Jesus' Face

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

Consider that the holy woman named Veronica, seeing Jesus so afflicted, and His face bathed in sweat and blood, presented Him with a towel with which He wiped His adorable face, leaving on it the impression of His holy countenance.

"If I know that someone is afflicted in body or in soul, what will I not do in the presence of the Lord to see him freed from these evils? I should willingly take upon myself all his sufferings, if I could only free Him from them. I should surrender in His favor the fruits of these sufferings, if the Lord were to permit it." - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

Seventh Stations

Jesus Falls the Second Time

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

Consider the second fall of Jesus under the cross - a fall which renews the pain of all the wounds of the head and body of our afflicted Lord.

"Yes, I love the cross and only the cross. I love it because I see it always on the shoulders of Jesus. Now Jesus sees clearly that all my life and all my heart is vowed to Him and to His sufferings. " - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

Jesus Speaks to the Daughters of Jerusalem

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.Consider that those women wept with compassion at seeing Jesus in so pitiable a state, streaming with blood, as He walked along. But Jesus said to them, “Weep not for Me but for yourselves and for your children. "(Luke 23:28)" Do not be worried that the time of trial is so long. We only reach salvation by crossing the stormy sea, which constantly threatens to overwhelm us. Calvary is the hill of the saints but from it we go on to another hill called Tabor." - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

Ninth Stations

Jesus Falls the Third Time

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.Consider the third fall of Jesus Christ. His weakness was extreme, and the cruelty of His executioners excessive, who tried to hasten His steps when He had scarcely strength to move. "Do not forget that when it comes to suffering I am an egoist, that I want to suffer alone and that, though I am impatient to go to Christ, I should reproach myself if I sought to be without suffering for one single moment or, worse still, if others tried to take this privilege from me." - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

Tenth Stations

Jesus is Stripped of His Garments

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.Consider the violence with which the executioners stripped Jesus. His inner garments adhered to his torn flesh and they dragged them off so roughly that the skin came with them. Have pity on your Savior thus cruelly treated. "Jesus says to me that in love it is He who delights me but in sorrow it is I who delights Him. When He wishes me to know that He loves me, He grants a share in the wounds, the thorns and the agonies of His passion. When He wishes me to rejoice, He fills my heart with that spirit which is all fire." - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.Consider that Jesus, after being thrown on the cross, extended His hands, and offered to His eternal Father the sacrifice of His life for our salvation. "Only Jesus can understand what I suffer, as I prepare for the sorrowful scene of Calvary. Nobody can understand either what relief Jesus has when someone not merely shares his sufferings but when a soul for love of Him does not ask for consolation but rather to share in these same sufferings." - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

Twelfth Stations

Jesus dies on the Cross

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.Consider how Jesus, after three hours of agony on the cross, consumed at length with anguish, abandoned Himself to the weight of His body, bows His head, and dies. "Here at the foot of the cross, souls are clothed in light and inflamed with love. Here souls receive wings that will carry them still higher. May this cross be always for us our bed of rest, our school of perfection, our beloved inheritance. You have made me climb to the cross of Your Son and I am always striving to fit myself better for it. I am convinced that I shall never come down from it." - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.Consider that, our Lord having expired, two of His disciples, Joseph and Nicodemus, took Him down from the cross, and placed Him in the arms of His afflicted mother, who received Him with unutterable tenderness, and pressed Him to her bosom. "I know well that the cross is the pledge of love, the cross is the guarantee of pardon, and the love that is not fed and nourished by the cross is not true love. I have a great desire to suffer for love of Jesus." - Padre Pio

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father…

Fifteenth Stations

Jesus is Risen

L: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.

All: Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.Consider that before the mystery of Christ if we are sinners it is important that we should descend the slopes of Calvary converted. full of faith and hope and sincerely open to Christ's love. We can descend from Golgotha with Mary if we are innocent or with the centurion converted if we are sinners. "Do not fear adversity, because by it your soul that is placed at the foot of the cross, which takes you to the doors of Heaven. There you will find Him who triumphed over death who will introduce you to eternal happiness." - Padre Pio
